The new Fantastic Four movie is out, and it’s the first major motion picture to be mixed on our brand new Avid S6 control surface, recently installed in Studio F. Scored by Phillip Glass, the mix was done here at The Village by legendary British engineer John Kurlander. Kurlander is probably best known for his engineering and mixing work on Lord Of The Rings: “Fellowship Of The Ring”, “The Two Towers” and “Return Of The King”. He took home three consecutive Grammys for Best Score Soundtrack Album, and 3 consecutive TEC Awards for Best Film Sound Production. Not a bad captain for the S6’s motion picture maiden voyage, as it were. It was quite a treat getting to watch Kurlander work his magic on the S6, and we can’t wait to see what he comes in with next!
The Village recently had the privilege of partnering with Make-A-Wish Hawaii to make the wish of 16 yr. old Jin Shaw come true. As a passionate music enthusiast, Jin’s wish was to record an original rap song at a professional LA recording studio; a pretty amazing wish, if you ask us. Paired with writer Will Wetzel and The Village’s own audio engineer, Gabe Burch, Jin spent 3 days in the studio creating what was nothing short of magic.
While Jin was delighted by his writing and recording experience, we benefited from working with this impressive young man just as much. Gabe said, “It was a great weekend for me. Jin is as talented as he is inspiring, and having the chance to meet and work with him and his family at the studio was a wonderful experience. I’m grateful to Make-A-Wish for providing me the opportunity to use my musical background to hopefully make a meaningful, positive difference in someone else’s life.”
A huge thank you goes out to Make-A-Wish Hawaii for making this experience possible, and to Jin; You are truly inspiring, and it was an honor to be a part of your journey!

“Wildheart” is a fantastic concept album, which sounds unlike anything else you’ll hear in 2015. From the straight-forward R&B of his first album, to the alternatively influenced “Kaleidoscope Dream”, Miguel has managed to augment his style yet again; This time with the help of funky rock & roll guitar, and trippy, ambient synths. This album is undeniably sexy.
What makes us love “Wildheart” even more? Much of the album was written and recorded here at The Village! Miguel has been a part of The Village family for years now, and was an absolute delight to work with, as always. We’re honored to be a part of this incredible record! Congratulations Miguel!

And here’s a great shot of Miguel in our Studio B taken from this Rolling Stone article:
On May 16th, the TV film “Bessie” premiered on HBO. The film stars Queen Latifah as Bessie Smith, the legendary American blues singer otherwise known as “The Empress of the Blues”. Queen Latifah lent her own vocals for the film, and the sessions were engineered here at The Village by one of our own, Ed Cherney. Check it out here!
“Currency Of Man” is stylistically different for Gardot, featuring her primarily on electric guitar – a departure from her typical piano heavy tracks. Furthering it’s uniqueness, the album was tracked to Analog tape, and tuned to 432hz.
We think the album is an absolute work of art, and Billboard agrees! Just this week, “Currency Of Man” went to #1 on Billboard’s Jazz Chart. Check it out here!
